@ekocentric I'm referring to the school principal when I mentioned an "old bat." I felt a lot better about this movie when I saw all of the deleted parts. Including the ending where Jenny is an Oxford student riding her bike with a young man. David comes driving up looking like a hot mess begging her to come back to him. And to tell her that he had volunteered to serve time in prison for over 190 offenses and thefts!! She turned him down flat and said: "I'm at Oxford now David." And walked off.

I was stationed at Lakenheath Royal Air Force base in east Anglia (It's an American base by the way) a little over 3 decades ago and I felt very sad for poor little Jenny in the movie. Until I remembered that a 16 year old in the early 60's in another country would not have been as "out there" by herself as someone (like myself) here who had been sheltered. She was better equipped to deal with his betrayal than he was. She was the grown up in their relationship.

Everybody is saying "she seems so much older in real life compared to An education"... Does anyone get that in the film she played a 16 year old and in real life she's 24. In movies if someone is playing a character younger than themselves they have to act younger, plus the make-up they would have used would have contributed to the physical side of things, plus since the movie she got her hair cut, which did make her appear younger. She's a great actress who can pretend to be any age!!

I saw it today and was a bit disappointed, I expected something really huge. The whole film is really good, Carey Mulligan is amazing and her character too, but I think it's the rest of the film who isn't that great next to Carey. I didn't like David the first time I saw him. I really wished she ends up with Danny, but then it would be an whole different story.

But in some classrooms wi-fi is not great/non- existent. @billymine130 Well, if you want to send email, obviously you need to have internet whether you're using gmail or not. If you simply want to access messages, there's an option in gmail to cache the messages locally so you can read them offline. (or you can always use outlook with gmail, but then you can't use the cool gmail features / web interface)

I know, I'm actually an IT specialist and I am fully aware of the level of security provided by google. That's is not really my problem. My problem is that when I lose my connection I also lose the access to most of my data. What I would like to see would be an app(or apps) provided by Google that would allow me to have my own local copy of all the data stored by Google for me. If that was possible I wouldn't really mind cloud computing. I'm sorry if I didn't make my position clear enough.

We just rolled this out to our students and staff this last october. Staff are still using exchange, but using the google piece for collaboration with students. Will be having discussions about switching staff to Google for all e-mail and getting rid of exchange. We use our Active Directory usernames and passwords by using the easily implimented Moodle SSO plugin. Recently discussed our implimentation at the Minnesota Ties Technology Conference 2009.

I am not too worried about big brother Google at this point, maybe I should be; but I take no comfort in the idea that "only a computer" reads my mail, not a human. I am sure a computer program can be taught to violate privacy in a way never even imagined of human readers. i think you're right, we should be encrypting our emails just like we used to put letters in "envelopes" so only the recipient would see them.

@UncleJoey12 I'm not sure how many years we bought it for, I just know we dumped it asap. You make a good point that we probably had to buy a minimum of 5 years and "lose money" by getting rid of it. We decided it was more important to have kids learn than "get our money's worth" and keep the program. this is weird, In NY, in 1-6 grade, calculators are not allowed at ALL, even though we are taught the efficient ways of math like doing the multiplication vertically. Which in this video is looked down upon, Im not sure if that effects my school programs when i was in 4th and 5th grade which was in 2004-2006. Calculators were only introduced in 7th grade and up since we had to do computing that you cannot possibly do with your head. Im not talkin about 107*763 i mean like Tangent and Sin Cos.

Everyday Mathematics is not effective. It teaches kids to depend on a calculator. My school district dumped this program after 2 years. It's a good idea to expose kids to alternative algorithms just to show problems can be solved in different ways, but the basics must be the focus first, foremost and most often.

@sleeper2345 I won't dispute it further, I agree it's effective. But does it remain effective with larger problems? In the problem, I can also subtract 9 from 72 and 7 from 16 to get 93. Okay I didn't borrow anything, but it's similar. Either way, you have to learn a method to solve the problem, and should be one you can use again and again. My teachers taught the standards, but only asked us to get the right answer and show our work. If we found a better method we could use it.

@tubeview72 My son computed 172 - 79 by taking 72 - 79 (-7), then taking 7 away from 100. See the article by mathematician Hyman Bass in Teaching Children Mathematics (Volume: 9 , Issue: 6 , Page: 322-327). This is a more efficient algorithm than the traditional subtraction algorithm. However, my son was not able to use this as he progressed into 4th grade. Also, teaching students the most efficient algorithm first is not the best if the child has little understanding of procedure.

No one can make sense of the traditional multiplication algorithm without an understanding of the partial products algorithm. The traditional multiplication algorithm builds on the partial products algorithm. We could start reading by having students read Shakespeare. That's a better analogy for what we do with mathematics.

But it works, and not everyone can brown bag it. Lastly, all schools MUST teach shop classes, music classes, labs, and everything else you need more than a note book to learn. All this could be done with small changes in prodocall, but for best results, the education budget in the U.S. would have to be raised to 10-20% of the actual federal budget rather than 6%. If a kid can't pass in 10th grade, but their track record through school is great, they should graduate without a discussion about it. And these tests label schools underperforming when they are making so much progress. Last year my school didn't make Adequate yearly progress because we were short 2 of the 48 objectives needed to pass. ridiculous.

He apparently believes that teachers are leaving because they need mentoring. Thank you. It is not a game. However gaming theory has quite a bit of learning theory embedded. When 14 kids from around the world jump onto a multi-player online game like Call of Duty and one takes on a leadership role and demonstrates leadership and teaming skills, he is learning. So 2nd Life does look a bit like a game but it's not about the look and feel, it's how it is designed and applied.

Quite an intellectual discussion about a serious technology. Second Life is phase I of a new way to learn and interact with people and learn through experience and practice. Consider 6 students. Each one is in a different country around the globe. Each one is confined to a wheel chair. They want to meet to discuss and experience ancient structures like the Great Wall of China or the Pyramids. In technologies like 2nd LIfe this is possible.

If anyone likes this special way of music, there is a band from Germany, called Van Canto, they do classic metall in acapella style, only added instrument in their songs are drums, everything else in the songs they do by voice ( even the guitar Solo's), if curious, check them out, you won't be disapointed

@sliferdragon1 Apocalyptica is a particular band, some people say they are a Symphonic Metal band, but I don't really agree, I'd rather to say they are a Classical Rock/Metal band (Symphonic Metal is like Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation,...). They use classical instrument and they do a "rockish/metalish" music with, so for me it's a Classical Rock/Metal band. But, their kind of music is not really defined because they are the only one of this kind. Sorry if my english is a bit clumsy :)

You need to have interest in a language in order to learn it well, regardless of the degree of difficulty of the language. It helps that a child starts learning 2 languages at the same time from the age of five, it will be easier as the brain is very absorptive at that age. I learned a good amount of indonesian and japanese too. however being bilingual is not all its cut out to be. i mean its nice to have a cultural understanding of the language, but when it comes to languages chinese, and the middle eastern languages are the only languages worth learning. othere than those regions, the whole rest of the world speaks english! learn math or science instead!

When I switch off, I get bored. When I get bored, I drive my Wrangler, and the EPA just LOVES my Wrangler.
